A Brief History of Electric Vehicles…

Now, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and explore the fascinating history of electric vehicles (EVs).

Fun Fact: The first crude electric vehicle, a tricycle, was built by French inventor Gustave Trouvé in 1881.

Did you know: In 1859 the first lead acid battery was invented by French physicist Gaston Planté and improved upon by Camille Alphonse Faure, another French scientist around 1881

The Beginning of Advancements in Technology: By 1888, German engineer Andreas Flocken had created the first real electric car.  The early 1900s saw innovations from figures like Thomas Edison, who dabbled in electric vehicles, and Ferdinand Porsche, who designed an all-wheel-drive electric car. With innovative electric cars like the The 1914 Beardsley electric car and the Henney Kilowatt electric car.

Fun Fact: Electric locomotives (and trains) also played an important role in the evolution of the Electric vehicle we have today all the way back to 1834! Thanks to people like: Vermont blacksmith Thomas Davenport, and chemist Robert Davidson

Volkswagen’s Journey: Volkswagen’s journey into electric vehicles began with experimental or concept models like the 1972 Elektro-Bus and the 1976 Electric Golf Mk1. Over the years, Volkswagen continued to innovate with models like the Golf CitySTROMer series in the 1980s and 1990s, the 2011 Volkswagen NILS concept, and the 2013 e-Golf.
